Jewels

Now it is has been over four weeks since surgery.  Jewels is now at the point that the surgeon said she can return to normal activity.  She is doing really awesome on her three legs!  She is back to her happy self as she hops around.  I even let her go upstairs now at night so she can stay with us in our room to sleep.  She gingerly manages to get down the steps carefully on her own now.  Since she is an older dog, I do not expect her to go on long hikes like we used to.  Even before diagnosis she was slowing down due to her old age.  But the important thing is that she is happy and still comes to greet us when we come home.  She seems even more fully aware of what is going on around her instead of being “drugged-up” on high doses of pain meds.  Her appetite is really good too.  She was never a big eater, picky even.  Lately it seems she has been wanting to eat a lot.  And that’s great!

Our oncologist prescribed L-glutamine and probiotics.  We have decided to not do chemotherapy but try other natural approaches to keep her comfortable and to stave off the cancer for as long as possible.  I am continuing to have her on a grain-free diet.  Mostly a combination of kibble (Costco’s salmon and sweet potatoe) and stinky canned food made by Evo.  She gets multi-vitamins, glucosamine, fish oil, fresh garlic, parsley.  For snacks I’ve been giving her frozen green beans and broccoli.   She is on one tramadol twice daily and 1/2 carprofen twice daily–significantly less amounts than what she was on pre-surgery!
